Workshop on Combating Digital/Internet Piracy in Ukraine

CLDP, the US Department of Justice, and the US Patent and Trademark Office, in collaboration with the State Intellectual Property Service of Ukraine (SIPSU), the Ministry of the Interior, the Fiscal Service of Ukraine and the private sector, as well as the US Embassy in Ukraine, held a two day workshop on Combating Digital/Internet Piracy in Ukraine. The workshop participants included government representatives, representatives of IP right holders, law enforcement officials, regulators, lawyers and other stakeholders.

CLDP experts Frederic Hirsch, Principal, Hirsch IP Solutions, Cameron Andrews, Senior Legal Adviser, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), and Jan van Voorn, Vice President, Global Content Protection, Internet Operations, Motion Picture Association (MPA), combined their experience with Matt Lamberti, Prosecutor, Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ), Don Townsend, Intellectual Property Rights Attaché, US Embassy Moscow, and Dorian Mazurkevich, Attorney Advisor, Office of Enforcement, USPTO to provide the workshop the most current mechanisms to combat  - websites hosting pirated content, the use of unauthorized servers, and the circumvention of technological protection measures.

As a result of the workshop Ukraine’s regulatory and enforcement agencies have improved their skill and knowledge to combat digital/internet piracy and have determined to adopt deterrent mechanisms against unauthorized recording; strengthen enforcement against major channels of piracy over the Internet; and further develop specialized enforcement units.
