Workshop on Opportunities and Challenges for Agricultural Biotechnology in Ukraine

-
Professor Blume of the Institute of Food Biotechnology and Genomics at the National Academy of Science of Ukraine speaks on biotechnology issues in Ukraine.

CLDP, in cooperation with the Institute of Food Biotechnology and Genomics at the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Croplife International, organized a two-day workshop in Kyiv, Ukraine on Opportunities and Challenges for Agricultural Biotechnology, on April 5-6, 2011. Utilizing the expertise of US, European and Ukrainian government officials, scholars, scientists and private sector representatives, the workshop was aimed at officials from the Government of Ukraine involved in food safety and biotechnology regulation, private sector producers and importers, as well as members of the legislature and the Presidency.  Speakers included a representative from USDA, PG Economics UK, EuropaBio, the Polish Maize Growers Association and the University of California Riverside. The program is part of a long-term strategy to inform key opinion and decision makers in Ukraine of the economic benefits delivered by crops improved through biotechnology, and to assist the Government of Ukraine to develop biotech law and policy that will provide a system of science-based evaluation and regulation. Such a system would permit safe agricultural biotech seeds to be grown and biotech foods and products to be imported in a manner consistent with international experience, Ukraine’s obligations under the WTO, and its public health, economic and environmental self-interests.
