-
Participants discuss the U.S. GSP Program.

CLDP held workshops and site visits on US Import Standards for GSP-Eligible Agricultural Products in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi, Georgia for 125 government officials, trade association representatives, and private sector agricultural producers. The goal of the program was to increase and diversify Georgia's exports by developing the capacity of Georgian agricultural producers to take advantage of the U.S. GSP program, and to help producers understand U.S. standards and regulatory requirements for agricultural imports. The program included a comprehensive set of materials for participants that included not only information about US departments and agencies involved in food and beverage imports but also specially written information about products of particular importance to potential Georgian exporters. Advisors for the program included a representative from the Department of Agriculture/APHIS, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Commerce/ITA, the Office of the United States Trade Representative/GSP, Customs and Border Protection, and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Also speaking to participants was a representative from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the Georgian National Investment Agency as well as the Ministry of Agriculture's Office of Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection. The workshops received widespread press coverage in print, radio and television. In a television interview, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili praised the workshops and encouraged Georgian businesses to attend.
