On May 4^th – 5^th, 2022, CLDP hosted a workshop on broadband connectivity including 38 representatives from the Jamaican Spectrum Management Authority (SMA), the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), and other technology agencies in Kingston, Jamaica, to discuss the expansion of high-speed broadband internet to underserved communities. The workshop included speakers from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), Microsoft’s Airband Initiative, and the Wireless Internet Service Provider Association, who discussed both private sector and governmental solutions to rural connectivity challenges. The keystone of the event was the signing of a MoU between the FCC and SMA, creating a framework for future collaboration between the two agencies on common ICT objectives. The workshop contributed to the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership, a U.S. Government initiative to help partner countries harness the power of an open, reliable, and secure digital economy.
