Central Asia faces considerable frictions in electronic cross-border payments that curtail domestic transactions, trade and ecommerce. At the same time, the region seeks to build an inclusive ecommerce framework, to promote women’s full participation in digital trade and economic activity.  To address this matter, CLDP brought together 55 public and private sector representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Almaty, Kazakhstan, for the ongoing Central Asia Digital Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment Working Group, to explore the landscape of cross-border electronic payments and inclusive digital trade policies in Central Asia.  The first day of the program centered on electronic cross-border payments, where participating representatives shared concrete feedback on the ecosystem for e-payments in their respective countries, and actionable recommendations on how to operationalize a draft roadmap for regional cross-border payments interoperability.  The group then went on to discuss inclusive digital trade policies for women’s economic empowerment, including developing concrete ideas on how women’s perspectives and needs may be integrated into digital trade policymaking for a more inclusive and equitable digital economy in the region.
