On December 5-7, CLDP joined a delegation from the Department of State and the Department of Interior to provide a three-day workshop to the Government of Chile in Punta Arenas on how to evaluate and mitigate the impacts of multi-stage horizontal hydraulic fracturing (fracking).  Chile’s regulators, including its Environmental Evaluation Service and its Superintendent of the Environment, have no experience in evaluating the impacts of multi-stage horizontal fracking.  Under Chilean law, these regulators must approve an environmental impact assessment for such a project to go forward.  An oil and gas company now requests to implement multi-stage horizontal fracturing in one of its natural gas fields in the Tierra del Fuego area.  CLDP advised on how US federal and state laws and regulations have evolved to evaluate the environmental impacts of these advanced oil and gas development operations, and what Chile can learn from the US’s experience.
