CLDP facilitates Africa IP Group meeting at INTA 2013

The nascent Africa Intellectual Property Group (AIPG) is a voluntary Africa-wide association of IP owners, officials, practitioners, institutions, and industry associations, with a shared desire to determine practical and innovative solutions to the challenges posed by counterfeiting and piracy, as well as the effective utilization of IP rights to foster innovation and economic growth in Africa. During CLDP’s March 2013 regional Workshop on the Practical Approaches to IP Utilization and Protection in Tanzania, the AIPG Executive Committee articulated in action, its vision for facilitating communication and capacity building on the practical approaches to the utilization and protection of IP.  The outreach to build a broad based multi-sectoral and multi-regional membership continues.  While the membership is multi-sectoral (from IP regulatory and enforcement officials, to IP stakeholders- musicians, authors, filmmakers, business), much of the braintrust is composed of IP lawyers and academics who meet annually at the International Trademark Association (INTA) meeting.  CLDP thus facilitated the organization of the AIPG meeting on May 6th at INTA 2013 for about 50 participants in Dallas, TX to support the continued growth and capacity building of AIPG in its goal to promote the economic benefits of the practical protection and utilization of IP in Africa.
