Egyptian Trademarks Office Celebrates 70 Year Anniversary

Egyptian company representative receives award.

CLDP, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Egyptian Trademarks Office held a seminar in trademarks and intellectual designs protection to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Egyptian Trademarks Office. H.E. Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid awarded three Egyptian companies trophies for their active use of trademarks and industrial designs system and for being pioneers in the field of trademarks and industrial designs registration. Plaques were also awarded to recognize the longest continuously registered Egyptian marks. WIPO and USPTO advisors addressed topics that included the benefits of using the Madrid System of trademarks registration, using the intellectual property system to promote your business, principles for filing an international application and maintaining an international registration as well as WIPO and US Department of Commerce technical assistance and capacity building programs for Arab countries. Egyptian speakers discussed the Egyptian experience in international registration and the developments in registration and enforcement. As a result of the workshop, the Egyptian Trademarks Office has already received multiple inquiries from Egyptian businesses requesting assistance in registering locally and abroad to ensure protection of their trademarks. The event was held on December 16, 2010 at the Fairmont Nile City hotel in Cairo. Prior to this event, CLDP and USPTO held a two day training workshop at the Internal Trade Development Authority (ITDA) offices that targeted trademark officers and board of appeals judges focusing on more specific topics that included likelihood of confusion, distinctiveness of marks, registration of trade dress and an overview of the trademark and trial appeal process in the US. As a result of this successful program, ITDA is requesting a follow up program on enforcement issues.
